Mission Requirements

1.    Landing

The TEAM must land a vehicle, hereinafter referred to as a CRAFT, on the surface of the Moon. All TEAMs shall obtain prior approval from the Google Lunar X PRIZE Judging Panel of the proposed lunar landing site. This requirement is in place in order to eliminate unnecessary risks to historically or scientifically significant sites on the lunar surface.

2.    Mobility

The CRAFT or a secondary vehicle carried by the CRAFT must move a distance of at least 500 meters along the surface of the Moon in a deliberate manner. This journey may be completed on, above, or below the lunar surface, so long as all other mission requirements are met. This total distance traveled may be a straight line displacement, or may be a journey connecting a series of waypoints approved by the Google Lunar X PRIZE Judging Panel.

3.    “Mooncast” Minimum Dataset

The CRAFT or a secondary vehicle shall transmit from the surface of the Moon two “Mooncasts”, an “Arrival Mooncast” and a “Mission Complete Mooncast,” both defined below - for delivery to XPF. A “Mooncast” is a minimum dataset that must be transmitted back to Earth from the CRAFT or secondary vehicle after landing on the surface of the Moon. The CRAFT or secondary vehicle video camera system shall have pan, tilt, and zoom capabilities.

3.1    Mooncast Minimum Size

The CRAFT shall transmit as much data as required to completely deliver the two Mooncasts. The Mooncast requirements are designed around the expectation of successful delivery of at least 500 Megabytes (MB) of useful data per Mooncast.

3.2    Arrival Mooncast Content

The Arrival Mooncast is the first of two required minimum datasets that must be transmitted from the surface of the Moon and delivered to XPF. The content of the Arrival Mooncast, which details the CRAFT’s arrival on and initial exploration of the lunar surface, is described below.

3.2.1 One Descent Video showing the descent to the lunar surface, including the moment of touchdown, from a horizon-facing or downward-facing camera, with a minimum length of 2 minutes.
a. Transmitted as a Near Real Time video, defined below, at the earliest possible opportunity.
b. Transmitted before completion of the mission in High Definition, defined below.

3.2.2 One Arrival Video, the first video taken on the lunar surface, showing the CRAFT’s landing site and surrounding environment, with a minimum length of 30 seconds.
a. Transmitted as a Near Real Time video at the earliest possible opportunity.
b. Audio Voiceover track, provided by XPF as part of the XPF Data Set Aside described in Section 2.3.5, shall be included as the audio track for this video.
c. Transmitted before completion of the mission in High Definition.
3.2.3 The following Arrival Images:
a. One Arrival Panoramic Image, defined below, showing the CRAFT’s landing site.
b. Three Arrival Self Portrait Detail Images, each substantially different, defined below, containing the GLXP logo cluster and at least 40% of the CRAFT surface area.
c. One Arrival GLXP Logo Detail Image of the logo cluster, within context of the lunar surface.

3.2.4 One video, provided by XPF as part of the XPF Data Set Aside described in Section 3.3.5, sent as the first pre-recorded video message to be delivered from the surface of the Moon.

3.2.5 One email, provided by XPF as part of the XPF Data Set Aside described in Section 3.3.5, sent as the first email to be delivered from the surface of the Moon.

3.2.6 One text message, provided by XPF as part of the XPF Data Set Aside described in Section 3.3.5, sent as the first text message to be delivered from the surface of the Moon.

3.2.7 Additional Near Real Time video showing the CRAFT’s landing site, with a minimum cumulative length of 6 minutes. The video or videos must include multiple shots showing new perspectives.

3.2.8 Additional High Definition video taken from the Lunar Surface showing the CRAFT’s landing site, with a minimum cumulative length of 6 minutes. The video or videos must include multiple shots showing new perspectives.

3.3. Mission Complete Mooncast Content

The Mission Complete Mooncast is the second of two required minimum datasets that must be transmitted from the surface of the Moon and delivered to XPF. The content of the Mission Complete Mooncast, which details the CRAFT’s journey along the lunar surface and the final completion of the Google Lunar X PRIZE Mission Requirements, is described below.

3.3.1 One Departure Video showing the CRAFT’s or secondary vehicle’s first departure from the landing site to begin roaming the lunar surface, with a minimum length of 30 seconds.
a. Transmitted as a Near Real Time video at the earliest possible opportunity.
b. Transmitted before completion of the mission in High Definition.

3.3.2 One Looking Back Video showing the original landing site receding as the CRAFT or secondary vehicle begins to roam the lunar surface, with a minimum length of 30 seconds.
a. Transmitted as a Near Real Time video at the earliest possible opportunity.
b. Transmitted before completion of the mission in High Definition.

3.3.3 One Looking Back Detail Image showing the CRAFT’s original landing site after the CRAFT or secondary vehicle has begun to roam.
a. If the TEAM does not use a secondary vehicle, the Looking Back Detail Image must clearly show tracks starting at the original landing site.
b. If the TEAM uses a secondary vehicle, the Looking Back Detail Image must contain at least 40% of the CRAFT’s surface area.

3.3.4 One Mid-Journey Video taken from onboard the CRAFT or secondary vehicle while in motion along the lunar surface, with a minimum length of 30 seconds.
a. Transmitted as a Near Real Time video at the earliest possible opportunity.
b. Transmitted before completion of the mission in High Definition.

3.3.5 One Mid-Journey Self Portrait Detail Image of the CRAFT or secondary vehicle, containing at least 40% of the CRAFT or secondary vehicle surface area after it has roamed approximately 250 meters.

3.3.6 One Journey’s End Video, showing the CRAFT or secondary vehicle’s destination at the end of the 500 meter roam and its surrounding environs, with a minimum length of 30 seconds.
a. Transmitted as a Near Real Time video at the earliest possible opportunity.
b. Transmitted before completion of the mission in High Definition.

3.3.7 One Journey’s End Panoramic Image showing the CRAFT or secondary Vehicle’s location at the end of the 500 meter roam.

3.3.8 One Journey’s End Self Portrait Detail Image, containing at least 40% of the CRAFT or secondary vehicle’s surface area showing the its location at the end of the 500 meter roam.

3.3.9 Three Journey’s End Logo Detail Image of GLXP logo cluster within the context of the lunar surface from different perspectives.

3.3.10 Additional Near Real Time video showing the CRAFT or secondary vehicle’s waypoints and movement, with a minimum cumulative length of 5 minutes. The video or videos must include multiple shots showing new perspectives.

3.3.11 Additional High Definition Video taken from the Lunar Surface showing the CRAFT’s journey on the lunar surface, with a minimum length of 5 minutes. The video or videos must include multiple shots showing new perspectives.

3.4 Mooncast Quality

3.4.1 The Quality requirements in this section are subject to change and revision in consideration of evolving technology and other considerations.

3.4.2 Still image requirements from the lunar surface include the following:

1. Panoramic Images shall have the following attributes:
a.  Horizon level
b. Horizontal Dimension: 360º
c. Vertical Dimension: 120º
d. Minimum Resolution: 0.3 milliradians/pixel
e. In color

2.Detail Images shall have the following attributes:
a. Minimum resolution of 0.3 milliradians /pixel.
b.Reasonable Illumination
c.In color

3.  All Images be high quality, to show that their intended contents are reasonably visible. An example of a high quality image is one that meets the following attributes:
a. Quantization: Minimum of eight bits per pixel per color
b. Sagittal and Meridional Modulation Transfer Functions at the Nyquist frequency superior to 40%
c. A signal to noise ratio under sunlight illumination of 50:1
d. Calibrated for color correction

3.4.3 Video requirements from the lunar surface include the following:

1. Near Real Time Video shall have the following attributes
a. Transmitted to Earth and delivered to XPF as a high priority
b. Resolution: 320x240
c. Bitrate: 256 kbps
d. Frame rate appropriate to the action in the frame, with a maximum requirement of 15 frames per second
e. Minimum length: 30 seconds unless otherwise specified
f. In color

2.  High Definition (HD) video shall have the following attributes
a. Resolution: 720 progressive scan (720p)
b. Frame rate appropriate to the action in the frame, with a maximum requirement of 15 frames per second
c. In color

3.5 XPF Set Asides

3.5.1 XPF reserves 10 MB of data to transmit information data provided to TEAM prior to launch no later than 6 weeks prior to launch for integration with the Vehicle. Data will include, but is not limited to:
1. Video message to be sent as the first video greeting sent from the surface of the Moon.
2. Audio track to be sent accompanying the video shot on the surface of the Moon.
3. Email message to be sent as the first email message sent from the surface of the Moon.
4. Text message to be sent as the first text message sent from the surface of the Moon.

4.    Data Uplink

The TEAM must allow XPF to transmit at least 10 MB of data to the CRAFT while on the surface of the Moon, for later transmission back to Earth.

5.    Payload Requirements

The CRAFT must carry a payload or set of payloads collectively referred to as the “XPF Payload” to the surface of the Moon. The XPF Payload will be produced by XPF. Technical drawings and specifications of the XPF Payload item or items will be provided no later than July 20, 2009. The XPF Payload may include plaques and other systems that must be carried on the exterior of the CRAFT. The XPF Payload items will weigh a total of no more than 500 grams.
